Allow extra time:
- Arrive early. Heightened airport security measures increase the time needed to check in. Arriving at the airport 2 hours before your flights scheduled departure is advisable, however, passengers may want to consult with their airline for more specific arrival times. Allow even more time if traveling with young children, infants, or persons with disabilities.
Dropping Off/Picking Up:
- Active loading and unloading only is permitted in front of the terminals. (No parking or waiting will be allowed)
- Do not leave your car unattended in front of the terminal. Security measures dictate that unattended cars will be towed. Short-term and Long-term Parking is still available.
- Passengers can be met directly outside of screening or in the bag claim area.
- Use the airport’s free Park ‘N Wait lot to wait for arriving passengers then pick them up in front of the terminals or on the drive-through lanes in the short term parking structure. The lot is located south of the parking structure. Access it by circling in front of the terminals and following the signs posted on the left.
Check-in:
- A government issued photo identification (federal, state, or local) for passengers over 18 years old is required. Travelers may be asked to show this ID at subsequent points, such as at the gate, along with their boarding passes.
- Be prepared to answer questions about your bags. When asked who packed your bags and if you might have left them unattended at anytime, think carefully and answer the questions honestly. Criminals may use unsuspecting passengers to carry bombs or other dangerous items onto aircraft.
- E-ticket travelers should check with their airline to make sure they have proper documentation. Written confirmation, such as a letter from the airline acknowledging the reservation, may be required.
Screener checkpoints:
- Only ticketed passengers are allowed beyond the screener checkpoints, except for those with specific medical or parental needs.
- Each traveler will be limited to one carry-on bag and one personal bag (i.e., purse, briefcase, computer, etc.).
- All bags are subject to hand search
- There is an absolute prohibition of any sort of cutlery or pocket knives in carry on baggage. Click here for a detailed list of prohibited items.
- You may be searched and asked to remove your shoes for inspection.
- All electronic items, such as laptops and cell phones, may be subjected to additional screening. Be prepared to remove your laptop from its travel case so that both can be X-rayed separately (X-Rays will not cause any damage to your consumer electronic equipment).
- Limit metal objects worn on person.
- Travelers should remove all metal objects prior to passing through the metal detectors in order to facilitate the screening process.
- Luggage storage lockers are no longer available
Helpful Traveling Tips:
- If traveling with an e-ticket, contact your airline in advance regarding procedures before coming to the airport. You may be able to proceed to the gate if you are not checking baggage.
- Avoid packing anything that looks like or could be used as a weapon including the following: knives, cutting instruments, scissors (any size), ice picks, straight razors, box cutters, cork screws, etc. Also prohibited through the security checkpoints are: golf clubs, ski poles, baseball bats, pool cue sticks, hockey sticks, etc.
- Check with your airline regarding arrangements for unaccompanied minors, the elderly and other travelers with special needs.
- If you have a medical condition that requires you to carry a needle and/or syringe, you must also have the medication that requires such injection with you.
- Avoid carrying bottles of liquid through the screening checkpoint.
- Purchase drinks and food you wish to carry on board the aircraft after you have completed the security screening process since the process necessary to screen them will take extra time.
- Your checked bags may be selected for hand search or scanning through a CTX (computerized tomography x-ray) machine.
- Pack as light as possible
- Keep control of your bags at all times
- Remember your photo ID as you will not be able to fly without it
Checked Bag Screening:
In conjunction with the airlines serving Salt Lake City International Airport and the federal government, the Department of Airports have implemented a new program to screen bags checked in by originating passengers.
The four-tiered program will consist of ETD (explosive trace detection) equipment and personnel, CTX (computerized tomography x-ray) machines, canine explosive detection teams and stepped up hand searching. While passengers check-in, their bags will be swabbed with an ETD device. Bags showing a positive reaction to this test, will be scanned by a CTX machine and/or hand searched. Random CTX scanning will also be in effect. Nine canine explosive detection teams made up of specially trained police officers and dogs will patrol the entire airport focusing on bag processing areas.
Passengers are advised to be at the airport two hours in advance of their departure time. This will allow time for the process outlined above and the required x-ray and magnetometer screening of the passenger and carryon bags.
